The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is the largest prosecuting agency in Northern California.
The Office represents the law enforcement needs of Santa Clara County, which has a population exceeding 1,700,000 residents in fifteen cities, including San Jose and unincorporated areas. The District Attorney's Office handles over 40,000 cases a year. The Office has a staff of over 600 people, including attorneys, investigators, forensic analysts, paralegals, clerical workers and volunteers. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Crime Laboratory analyzes thousands of evidence items each year.
The Santa Clara County Crime Strategies Unit (CSU) studies crime trends and prosecution practices to ensure that police and prosecutors are well-informed and focused on the major crime issues facing our community.
The District Attorney's Office provides copies of police reports, recordings and photographs to defendants (persons charged with crimes) if they are pro-per status with the court and/or to their attorneys of record after a complaint has been filed with the court and there is a court date for appearance scheduled.

The Domestic Violence Unit of the Family Violence Division prosecutes domestic violence crimes. This includes misdemeanors and felonies. The Domestic Violence Unit of the Family Violence Division reviews all such cases and determines what charges will be filed.
Under California law, persons required to report elder and dependent adult abuse include care custodians, health practitioners, clergy members, officers and employees of financial institutions, Adult Protective Services staff, and law enforcement agencies, among others.
The Elder and Dependent Adult, Physical Abuse, Endangerment and Neglect Unit of the Family Violence Division, handles all criminal cases involving physical abuse, endangerment and neglect of Elders, and Dependent Adults.
The Elder and Dependent Adult Financial Abuse Unit prosecutes financial crimes against elderly and dependent adults.
The Environmental Protection Unit is responsible for enforcing laws intended to protect human health and the environment, and to ensure workplace safety.
The Family Violence Unit reviews, files, and prosecutes crimes of domestic violence; physical abuse, endangerment, and neglect of children, elders, and dependent adults; and child abduction crimes.
The Forensic Mental Issues Unit handles civil commitment and re-commitment proceedings involving sexually violent predators (P.C. 6600 et seq.); mentally disordered sex offenders (W&I 6316.2); mentally disordered offenders (P.C. 2970 et seq.) and the criminally insane (P.C.1026.2 and 1026.5).
