DA to students: Use art to fight smartphone cybercrime
District Attorney Jeff Rosen is asking Santa Clara County high school students to create and submit original art that helps the Office fight against online crimes targeting cell phone users including fraud, catfishing, and cyberbullying.
The winner will receive $1,500. The second-place winner will receive $1,000 and the third-place winner will receive $500.
Original art mediums are welcome: paint, pencil, charcoal, photography, graphic design, etc. Details regarding the submissions and contest rules are available.
Smart phones have revolutionized as a portable personal computer, a camera, and connection to the world using social media through apps like Instagram, Snap Chat, and TikTok. Smart phones have also made it sadly possible for many crimes to spread, such as online fraud, extortion, exploitation, and harassment.
“We in Silicon Valley are in unique place to help create technology and fight against tech crime,” DA Rosen said. “I want high school students to join me in raising awareness about smartphone cybercrime and help our community members stay safe from online crime.”
All Santa Clara County high school students are invited to submit their original work by Monday, January 13, 2025. Winners will be announced on Friday, January 31, 2025 on the District Attorney’s website and Facebook page.
In addition to the cash prize, the first-place winner’s original work will be prominently published on the District Attorney’s website and other venues. The top three winners will be honored at an awards ceremony in at a later date.
All entrants who do not place will receive a Starbucks gift card.
The prize money is made available through the District Attorney’s Asset Forfeiture funds. DA Rosen remarked, “We are re-purposing seized criminal assets and using them to promote awareness and fight crime.”
